The historic Staunton YMCA building was renovated into loft apartments in 2005. After many years as a rental unit, the owners of this condo had a grand vision: to increase the historic character of the space.

Many custom millwork details, a rich color palette, and a sense of whimsy brought new life and old charm to the space. The layout was reimagined with a bedroom removed to allow the living space to take advantage of as much of the views and natural light as possible, while a large utility space provides much needed storage and keeps functional elements out of sight. Vintage appliances were refurbished to function like new appliances, bringing back memories of the homeowner’s grandmother’s home.

Wintergreen Tudor Cottage

The landscape around Wintergreen Resort is mountainous and wooded, with homes nestled in the hills. The small lots necessitate creativity in working with the topography and site elements.

The landscape around Wintergreen Resort is mountainous and wooded, with homes nestled in the hills. The small lots necessitate creativity in working with the topography and site elements.

Designed for a retired couple, this cottage sits between the trees and captures the style they imagined, a modern interpretation of a Tudor home. The walls were built out with insulation to create the effect of stucco over masonry, while the curved roofs and varied dormers create the scale the client envisioned.

New Construction

See how thoughtful planning and timeless design come together in these custom-built homes.

New Victorian

On a Farm in Augusta County, a retired couple dreamed of building their retirement home, with a design based on a Queen Anne style house they clipped from a magazine decades before. To help them bring their list of dreams to reality was an absolute joy: a wrap-around porch, a turret, a tiny porch off the master bedroom facing the sunrise for morning coffee, not to mention space for their hobbies and for their kids and grandkids to gather. The finished product is actually a work in progress, as they complete the detailing and add elements as one of their countless retirement projects.

Fairfield Cottage

A new home steeped in the history of the architecture and places loved by its owner has a special meaning. Here, the owners came to Virginia from New Orleans, and found inspiration in the cottages they loved there.

Augusta Craftsman

Mountain views are the focus of this new home inspired by Craftsman style homes built around the country. Deep porches extend the living space outdoors; the open living areas are defined with unique ceiling treatments.

Marble Valley Colonial Revival

West of Staunton, on a large farm on the river, a large family was building their dream estate, complete with livestock operations, chickens, and a dairy cow. The design for the home included space for a school room in the spacious attic, a canning and butchering kitchen in the basement, and space for family gatherings in between. Colonial Revival detailing graces the exterior, while the interior is warm and bright with an open living space. Flanking garages create a welcoming courtyard space at the front of the home. At the rear, three stories of porches embrace the view.

Renovations

Explore how existing spaces were transformed with fresh purpose, character, and care.

Garage Conversion

Staunton’s historic districts are filled with unique structures waiting to be reclaimed for a new life. When a young couple set their sights on a dilapidated garage with a vision to transform it into a modern, light-filled home, a delightful design process ensued. Balancing between the historic guidelines and the need for light and egress presented unique challenges. The result is a joyful space that reflects the owners’ tastes and brings their vision to life.

This home was featured in Abode magazine and on the HGTV show “You Live in What?”

Villages at Staunton Renovation

The historic Villages at Staunton campus is the site of the original Western State hospital, adjacent to downtown and filled with historic architecture. A row of single family homes, originally constructed for the hospital physicians, stands out against a backdrop of larger buildings in the campus’s park-like setting; one of these is the newly renovated home of a retired couple.

The design process aimed to create a balance between modern amenities and historic details, while prioritizing accessibility for aging in place. At the same time, a historic easement placed restrictions on both the exterior and interior design. The end result is a bright, livable home that will serve the homeowners in this next phase of life.

Kitchen Renovation

This historic home in one of Staunton’s residential neighborhoods had been beautifully added on to by a previous homeowner, but the kitchen remained untouched. The layout was not ideal for a busy young family, and was cut off from the living spaces visually. The kitchen renovation resulted in a bright, open layout with beautiful finishes that brings joy and functionality to each day.

Farmhouse Addition

This historic Augusta County farmhouse sits overlooking views of the Blue Ridge mountains, and after many decades of love and meticulous maintenance by its long term owners, they decided to plan for aging in place. A new addition provided a ground floor bathroom, a living space that can function as a ground floor bedroom if needed, and a spacious kitchen and utility space. The massing and details of the addition complement the existing house without overwhelming its scale.

Historic Staunton Addition

This historic home on one of Staunton’s most iconic streets boasts gracious rooms and tall ceilings. Perched on a steep lot, the rear porches, which had been partially enclosed to house bathrooms, were in perilous condition and required complete removal and rebuilding.

The addition now houses a workshop on the lowest level; a powder room and sunroom on the main floor; and two bathrooms on the upper level. A deck extends into the yard and provides covered parking and an electrical vehicle charging station on the lowest level, with a generous gathering space above that connects to the patio and gardens.

Downtown Brookneal had suffered from disinvestment for many years. The opportunity to apply for a Community Development Block Grant gave them the chance to revitalize the downtown street scape, make infrastructure improvements, and provide matching grants to building owners for exterior building improvements.

State funding required historic review. The process included meeting with building owners to set goals and budgets, coordinating design including paint colors, and bidding and construction administration.
